Original blades are expensive – that is the most common reason why people look for blades from other manufacturers. But what is behind such replacement blades, how do the offers differ, and when is the original the better choice? This guide answers these questions objectively – without making promises that no one can keep.
What third-party replacement blades are
These replacement blades fit a specific razor handle, but do not come from the brand manufacturer. They are produced by other manufacturers. Brand names like Gillette Fusion5, Gillette Venus, or Philips OneBlade only describe which device the blade works with. There is no connection to these companies.
Two points should be clear: a third-party replacement blade is not an original – so there is a reason for the price difference. Conversely, "not an original" does not automatically mean "worse." What matters is what you are comparing.
Six points that count before buying
1. Does the blade really fit your handle?
This is the most important point. A reputable offer mentions the brand, series, and model numbers – for example, Gillette Fusion5 ProGlide or Philips OneBlade QP2520, QP2530, and QP2630. If it just says "suitable for many razors," caution is advised. With us, you select your device in the device finder and then only see products that fit it. You can find out where to find the model name in our guide Which blade fits which handle?
2. Number of blades and lubricating strip
A replacement blade for Fusion5 has five blades and a lubricating strip; a OneBlade blade works with a cutting element for trimming and shaving. Therefore, always compare like with like – not a five-blade cartridge with a two-blade system blade.
3. Material and workmanship
Pay attention to the information on the blade material (in our case: stainless steel) and whether the blade head clicks into place cleanly. What you would check in a store, you must be able to read online from product images and descriptions.
4. Pack size and price per blade
The pack price says little. Always calculate: price ÷ number of blades = price per blade. Compare each pack size individually in this way – and choose a size that suits your usage.
5. Cancellation, availability, legal notice
A reputable shop provides a complete legal notice (Impressum), an accessible address, and clear terms for cancellation and returns. The statutory right of withdrawal applies to distance selling anyway – what counts is how uncomplicatedly a merchant handles it.
6. Delivery time and shipping costs
Include shipping costs in the price per blade. With us, shipping within Germany is free, and the delivery time is generally 1 to 3 working days.
Calculation example: price per blade
Take the current price of the pack and divide it by the number of blades. Do this for both offers – original and replacement blade – and for different pack sizes. Only then will you see how big the difference really is. On our product pages, you can switch the pack size directly and compare the prices.
How long does a blade last?
There is no universally valid number for this. How many shaves a blade can handle depends on beard thickness, shaving frequency, preparation, and care. A good guideline: if the blade pulls, you go over the same spot multiple times, or the skin is irritated afterwards, it is time for a change. Rinse the blade thoroughly after every shave and let it dry in a dry place – that does more for any blade than any discussion about materials. You can find reference values for each system in the guide How often should you change your razor blade?
When the original is the better choice
Honestly: if you are used to a certain shaving sensation and do not want to change anything about it, stick with the original. This also applies if you have very sensitive skin and get along well with one product. Third-party replacement blades are particularly worthwhile if the price-performance ratio is more important to you than the brand name – and if you are willing to try out a pack.
In short
- A third-party replacement blade fits the handle but is not an original product from the brand manufacturer.
- The most important criterion is the exact model specification – not the price.
- Always compare the price per blade, not the pack price.
- Durability depends heavily on the beard and care – reputable information does not quote miracle numbers.
- If you don't want to change your accustomed shaving sensation, you are better off with the original.
