"Every two weeks" – you read this answer often, and it is about as helpful as "a car lasts for 200,000 kilometers." How long a razor blade lasts depends on a few things that you control yourself. Here are the benchmarks, the signs that it's time for a change, and the maintenance steps that actually make a difference.
Why there is no fixed number
Four factors determine how quickly a blade becomes dull:
- Beard strength and hair thickness. Coarse beard hair stresses the cutting edges significantly more than fine fuzz.
- Shaved area. Those who shave their face and neck completely wear out a blade faster than someone who only touches up their contours.
- Preparation. Warm water and shaving foam cause the hair to swell – dry, hard hair dulls the blade faster.
- Maintenance and storage. Residue and constant moisture affect the cutting edge long before it is truly worn out.
Benchmarks by system
Blades for Gillette Fusion5
As a rough guide, about 5 to 10 shaves per blade is the standard. Those who shave their entire face daily will likely be at the lower end; at two to three shaves per week, more towards the upper end.
Blades for Gillette Venus
When shaving the body, a larger surface area is covered in a single pass. Roughly estimate about 5 to 8 shaves – correspondingly less for very large areas. Which Venus blades fit which handle is explained in the guide Gillette Venus replacement blades.
Philips OneBlade
There is a manufacturer's specification here: According to Philips, the original replacement blade lasts up to 4 months – as a baseline, Philips cites two full shaves per week; actual results may vary. This figure refers to the original blade from the manufacturer, but it is the best available benchmark for this system. Those who shave more frequently or also trim their body with it will change it sooner accordingly.
Five signs that a change is due
- The blade tugs. Instead of cutting, it pulls at the hair – you will feel this immediately.
- You go over the same spot multiple times. If one stroke is no longer enough, the blade is no longer cutting cleanly.
- The skin is red or burns afterwards. A dull blade stresses the skin more than a sharp one. You can find out what else helps against irritated skin in the guide Avoiding razor bumps and razor burn.
- The lubrication strip is used up. On system blades with a lubrication strip, it visibly wears down – a rough guideline, not a precise measurement.
- There is residue or signs of rust between the blades. At the very latest, the blade should be replaced, even if it still seems sharp.
What really extends the lifespan
- Moisten beforehand. Warm water and foam or gel – this is the single biggest factor.
- Rinse thoroughly after every shave. Preferably from behind through the blade head, so that hair and foam are washed out.
- Store dry. Do not leave it in the shower. Constant moisture is the main reason why blades give up sooner than they have to.
- Shake off instead of wiping. When wiping on a towel, the fine cutting edge can become bent.
- Use home remedies with caution. There is no reliable evidence for tips such as honing on denim. Thorough rinsing and dry storage work reliably.
What a blade change costs
Calculate what a shave actually costs you: price of the pack divided by the number of blades, then divided by the number of shaves per blade. Example: If a 20-pack costs €28.41, that's about €1.42 per blade – with eight shaves, that's about 18 cents per shave. If you wait too long, you are cutting corners in the wrong place: the blade tugs, the skin is irritated, and you still have to shave anyway.
And for electric shavers?
Shaver heads and foils last significantly longer than wet razor blades. You can find the manufacturer's information and signs for when to change them in our guides When to change the Braun shaver head and foil? and When to change Philips shaver heads?
Briefly summarized
- There is no fixed number – beard thickness, area, preparation, and maintenance are the deciding factors.
- Blades for Fusion5: roughly 5 to 10 shaves. Venus: roughly 5 to 8. OneBlade: according to Philips, up to 4 months with two full shaves per week.
- Change at the latest when the blade tugs or the skin is irritated afterwards.
- Rinsing and dry storage achieve more than any discussion about materials.
